Beyond SPF: Mastering the Art of Sunscreen Application
Sunscreen isn't just a summer essential; it's your year-round shield against harmful UV rays. But applying sunscreen isn't as simple as slapping it on and heading out the door. Here are some tips to ensure you're getting the most out of your sunscreen application.
1. Choose the Right Sunscreen
Broad Spectrum: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Choose a sunscreen that is easy to apply and spreads easily.
SPF 30 or higher: Select a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates how long the sunscreen will protect you from UVB rays. Dermatologists recommend a minimum of SPF 30 for daily use.
Water-resistant: If you plan on swimming or sweating, choose a water-resistant sunscreen. Remember to reapply after 40-80 minutes of water activity.
Infants: Do not use sunscreen agents on infants younger than 6 months of age. For children 6 months of age and older, use lotion sunscreen with broad spectrum and at least SPF 15. An infant’s best defense against sunburn is avoiding the sun or staying in the shade.
2. Apply Generously and Early
Apply sunscreen to all skin not covered by clothing. For hard‐to‐reach areas like your back, ask someone to help you or use a spray sunscreen. If you are using spray sunscreen, ensure you are applying liberally and completely.
Dermatologists recommend using two ounces -- equivalent to a shot glass -- of sunscreen for exposed areas of the skin.
3. Don't Forget the Often-Missed Spots
Most overlooked areas: Ears, lips, tops of feet, uncovered areas of the scalp (hairline, bald areas, parted section of hair), behind the knees, under swimsuit straps and where the edge of swimsuit meets the skin, neck and chest, your eyelids and skin around the eyes, even if wearing sunglasses and backs of hands: These areas are often overlooked, but are just as susceptible to sun damage.
Use lip balm with SPF: Protect your lips from the sun's harmful rays.
YouV: Use YouV’s unique formulation and UV light to show missed spots and areas that you need to reapply. We recommend using the light indoors or in the shade. Always check your sunscreen application prior to sun exposure.
4. Reapply Regularly
Every two hours: Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you're sweating or swimming.
Immediately after towel-drying: Toweling off can remove sunscreen, so reapply after drying yourself.
Reapply: Because most sunscreens are easily removed from the skin, you should reapply these products liberally every 1 to 2 hours for adequate protection. You should reapply sunscreen especially after swimming or heavy perspiration. Use YouV to help reapply to areas that have washed off and need reapplication.
5. Sunscreen is Just One Part of Sun Protection
Seek shade: Especially during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Wear protective clothing: Hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved clothing can provide additional protection.
Remember: Sunscreen is a crucial part of a healthy skincare routine. By following these tips, you can ensure you're getting the most out of your sun protection and enjoying the sun safely. Only 14.3% of men and 29.9% of women regularly use sunscreen on both their face and other exposed areas. And yet, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. YouV is excellent sunscreen choice to ensure that you are fully protected from the sun.
